Min 0:00-0:46: Gemma starts speaking:
This is one of my long-time dreams: A Europe of the regions, a federalist Europe of the people, rather than a Europe of old-time states like today. That’s what Republic (Res Publica) means: Focus on citizens. I see Europe with a lot of color, a lot of cultural identities, and languages. I envision a kind of Star Trek world confederation, a confederation of the world regions, starting with a European confederation, step by step (Gemma smiles widely).
Min 0:46-0:51: Julius Kratky asks Gemma the first question:
What do you think are the most important next steps leading to a united Europe?
Min 0:51-1:41: Gemma answers Julius’ question:
Well, I believe the very first step is that we, as European women and men, get aware that we have important problems in Europe which need solutions, and reforms. We need to pay attention to what happens around us, e.g. what is the root cause of the Brexit, why do we have movements like, for example, in Catalonia and Scotland? We need to pay attention to these events with all our senses, be open for new solutions, and act. We need to be open for a new political, and social framework, rather than get stuck within the current state silos such as France, Spain or Italy. We must look beyond our own nose.
Min 1:41-1:52: Julius asks Gemma a tricky question:
Catalonia wants the independence, is this really compatible with a European Republic?
Min 1:52-2:45: Gemma answers Julius’ question:
Gemma smiles widely, and blissfully about Julius’ question. She feels like a fish in water.
For me the European Republic is the perfect umbrella for all European independence projects. All would be united under this new umbrella, beyond the current state forms. How would all these European regions, like Scotland and Catalonia, exist if not within a European Republic? For me it’s obvious that this is what we need: A united Europe of the regions. It fits beautifully. We would have a federalistic structure in this new Europe, with different diverse regions and languages, of course with regional self-organization, because a centralist European Republic makes no sense. All regions would collaborate and work together, and act in solidarity with each other, of course without borders.
Min 2:45-2:56: Julius asks Gemma an easier question:
You combine in yourself Germany and Catalonia. You live in Germany and you are building bridges between both, for example, you have also brought the European Balcony Project to Catalonia. What will happen there?
Min 2:56-4:02: Gemma answers Julius’ question.
We started the project only 3 weeks ago, funny timing, without much time to organize much, and it was not easy to find partners in Catalonia on such a short notice. But we found them! We found 3 great groups.
We’ll have a Cinema participating, an innovative, independent cinema founded by young people, the cooperative Zumzeig Cinema (Barcelona), and they will help us, and are excited about it.
We have the historical and emblematic Bookstore Llibreria Les Voltes (Girona), also very glad to support us.
And we also have the help of a the Catalan, and international activist association Foreign Friends of Catalonia. They will participate from a private location, rather than a theater.
And our group, CDR Heidelberg, will represent us both, German and Catalan sides, and we will meet live in Heidelberg on Saturday, Nov 10th to proclaim, and debate about, the European Republic. We will also open a YouTube live streaming to connect with all 3 locations in Catalonia in real-time, and it will be a lot of fun. Gemma smiles widely again, probably thinking about the technical challenges around the YouTube live streaming on Saturday, oh dear.

Aquest és un dels meus grans somnis de sempre: Una Europa de les regions, una Europa federalista de la gent i no dels estats del passat que encara sobreviuen avui. Aquest és l’origen del concepte de República (Res Publica), enfocada en la gent, la ciutadania. Veig una Europa plena de color, plena d’identitats culturals i de llengues, grans i petites. M’imagino una mena de Star Trek world federation, és a dir una confederació mundial de les regions, començant amb una confederació Europea, és clar, de mica en mica s’omple la pica (La Gemma riu amb gust).

Des del teu punt de vista quins són els primers passos més importants en el camí per construir una Europa unida?
Min 0:51-1:41: La Gemma contesta la pregunta del Julius:
Bé, crec que el primer pas és que les ciutadanes i els ciutadans ens adonem i siguem conscients que tenim problemes a resoldre i que necessitem reformes. Hem de parar atenció al que passa entorn nostre, per exemple, quin és l’origen profund del Brexit, per què hi ha moviments d’independència com el de Catalunya o Escòcia? Hem de prendre’ns tots aquests movimens i protestes seriosament i estar obertEs a noves idees, noves maneres d’actuar i nous sistemes d’organització política, més enllà de les no-solucions de tota la vida encallades en els estats que es miren el melic com França, España o Itàlia. Hem de mirar més enllà.

Gemma somriu amb autoconfiança abans de respondre en Julius. Es sent com un peix dins l’aigua.
Per a mi, la República Europea és just el marc, el paraigua, perfecte per tots els projectes d’independència. Totes les regions-nació estarien unides sota aquest paraigua, més enllà de les formes d’estat actuals. Com podria ser d’una altra manera, sinò amb regions com Escòcia i Catalunya dins una República Europea? Per a mi és obvi que això és el que necessitem: Una Europa unida de les regions. La idea quadra meravellosament. Seria una Europa d’estructures federalistes, amb regions i llengües diverses, evidentment autoorganitzades, perquè una República Europea centralista no té cap sentit. Les regions col.laborarien i serien solidàries entre elles, evidentment sense fronteres.
Min 2:45-2:56: En Julius fa una pregunta més fàcil a la Gemma:
Tu combines en tu mateixa Alemània i Catalunya. Ets catalana i alemanya, vius a Heidelberg i estàs creant ponts entre Alemània i Catalunya, per exemple, estàs portant el European Balcony Project a Catalunya. Quins plans teniu amb aquest projecte?

Hem començat aquest projecte fa només 3 setmanes i la primera data d’actuació és demà passat. Hem anat de bòlid i no hem tingut massa temps per preparar massa res en detall. No ha estat gens fàcil de trobar col.laboradors a Catalunya amb tant poc temps, però ho hem aconseguit i estem super contentEs. Hem trobat 3 grups col.laboradors molt macos.
Comptem amb la col.laboració d’un cinema innovador i independent en forma de cooperativa que ha estat iniciat fa uns anys per un grup de gent jove: El cinema Zumzeig (Barcelona), que està molt engrescat i ens donarà suport.
També estem encantats de comptar amb la col.laboració de l’emblemàtica i històrica Llibreria Les Voltes (Girona), que també està encantada d’ajudar-nos.
I també comptem amb l’associació d’activistes catalanEs i internacionals Foreign Friends of Catalonia. EllEs participaran des d’un local privat.
El nostre grup, CDR Heidelberg, representarà les dues parts, alemanyEs i catalanEs i ens trobarem a Heidelberg el dissabte 10 de Novembre per proclamar i debatir sobre la República Europea, i també orbriren un YouTube live streaming i ens connectarem amb els 3 grups de Catalunya en temps real, i ens ho passarem pipa… La Gemma somriu misteriosament, perquè probablement pensa en el desafiament tècnic del live streaming el proper dissabte.
